Abstract

Background: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a peripheral nerve disorder caused by compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel and is characterized by symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness, and hand weakness. This condition commonly occurs among workers performing repetitive activities and prolonged laptop or computer use. Physiotherapy interventions such as Nerve Glide Tendon Exercise (NGTE), Neuro Muscular Taping (NMT), and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) are commonly used to reduce CTS symptoms through different therapeutic mechanisms. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the combination of Nerve Glide Tendon Exercise and TENS compared with the combination of Neuro Muscular Taping and TENS in reducing pain among employees with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome due to laptop use at Telkom Access Office, West Jakarta. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a two-group pretest–posttest approach. A total of 28 respondents were selected through purposive sampling based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Participants were divided into two groups: Group A received a combination of NGTE and TENS, while Group B received a combination of NMT and TENS. Pain intensity was measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Data analysis was performed using Wilcoxon and Mann–Whitney tests. Results: The Wilcoxon test showed a significant reduction in pain intensity in both groups (p=0.001). Group A demonstrated a decrease in mean pain score to 2.86, while Group B decreased to 3.72. The Mann–Whitney test revealed a statistically significant difference in effectiveness between the two groups (p=0.001). Conclusion: Both the combination of Nerve Glide Tendon Exercise and TENS and the combination of Neuro Muscular Taping and TENS were effective in reducing pain in patients with CTS. However, the combination of Nerve Glide Tendon Exercise and TENS demonstrated greater effectiveness.
