Comparison of Bodyweight Training and Interval Walking Training for Blood Pressure Reduction in Stroke Prevention

Abstract

Background: Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality worldwide, with hypertension recognized as the most dominant modifiable risk factor. Physical exercise is an important non-pharmacological intervention to control blood pressure and reduce stroke risk. Objective: This study aimed to compare the effects of Bodyweight Training (BWT) and Interval Walking Training (IWT) on blood pressure reduction in pre-elderly individuals at risk of stroke. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest-posttest approach. Twenty-six participants were divided into two intervention groups consisting of 13 subjects in the BWT group and 13 subjects in the IWT group. Both interventions were conducted three times per week for four weeks. Blood pressure measurements were performed before and after the intervention. Data analysis used Wilcoxon Test, Paired Sample T-Test, and Independent T-Test. Results: The BWT group demonstrated a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (p=0.021), while the IWT group also showed a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (p=0.009). No significant reduction was found in diastolic blood pressure in either group (p>0.05). Comparison between groups revealed no significant difference in systolic (p=0.599) or diastolic blood pressure reduction (p=0.773). Conclusion: Bodyweight Training and Interval Walking Training were equally effective in reducing systolic blood pressure among pre-elderly individuals at risk of stroke and may be recommended as non-pharmacological interventions for stroke prevention.
